A commercial real estate investor/developer is looking for a Controller to join their growing team. Interested candidates must be self-motivated and able to take responsibility for all accounting-related activities at the company.   • Manage and lead a growing accounting department and establish regular rhythms of communication and reporting between the Executive, Property Management and Asset Management teams, and other third parties (such as investors, lenders)

  • Manage, develop and continuously improve departmental processes and procedures to ensure accurate, clean, timely and efficient preparation of corporate and property level books and financial statements

  • Conduct mini-audits of staff to ensure accurate financials and processes are in place

  • Monitor department bandwidth and proactively notify the Executive team of anticipated needs; Must take the initiative to regularly connect with the Executive team to understand the deal pipeline and corresponding resource implications

  • Continuously seek out training opportunities to ensure the growth and development of accounting staff

  • Oversee and ensure timely execution of all corporate and property level financials, including, coordination of AP/AR, bank reconciliations, tenant billings, cash disbursements, general ledger and account reconciliations, personal property reporting and sales/use tax filings and payments

  • Coordinate and ensure timely preparation of month-end, quarterly and year-end financial statements

  • Manage all corporate and property level banking activities, including, monitoring cash balances, setting up new accounts, initiating internal and external funds transfers, balancing intercompany accounts, and managing lender escrow accounts and internal reserves

  • Gain a thorough understanding of all corporate and property level financial agreements, including, partnership, management, and loan agreements, CC&Rs, vendor contracts and other relevant agreements to ensure financial compliance with the same

  • Ensure the accurate on-boarding of acquisitions and off-boarding of dispositions in the accounting system through coordination with the      appropriate teams to obtain the relevant documents and understand the business plan, and breakdown of financial responsibilities, flow of funds and billing structures specific to each transaction

  • Coordinate the corporate and property level distribution process, including, quarterly and periodic, mid-period analysis of corporate and property level financial performance, tracking and monitoring of partnership return accruals, and presentation of distilled financial data to Asset Management and Executive teams

  • Assist in preparation, monitor and manage corporate level operating budget and spending

  • Manage the tax filing process, including, timely 1099/1096 annual reporting and coordinate with outside CPAs to ensure timely, accurate and low-cost preparation of tax returns, including, preparation and review of quarterly and year-end tax schedules and development and maintenance of depreciation and amortization schedules and entries

  • Provide ad-hoc financial data and reports, as requested

  • Lead, mentor and develop the Accounting team to ensure employee satisfaction, employee retention, high-quality performance and continuous improvement, including, conducting monthly training and development meetings and establishing and monitoring performance scorecard/metrics for each team member

  • Facilitate strong inter-departmental communications, including but not limited to enhancement of enterprise use of Yardi

  • Maintain clean and accurate books and organized electronic files through the development and management of effective departmental processes and procedures and efficient utilization of alternative resources and technologies

  • Ensure all corporate and property level books are closed on time and with 100% accuracy each month, and related reports are distributed

  • Ensure investor distributions are completed on time and with 100% accuracy each quarter, and related reports are distributed


  • 10+ years accounting experience with a minimum 5 years in a senior management capacity; Most recent experience must be commercial real estate with specific experience in NNN reconciliations; Master fund or private REIT experience is a plus

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline

  • Accounting designation (CMA, CGA or CPA) preferred, or an equivalent combination of related experience and education

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and Yardi; Nexus experience is a plus

  • Excellent leader and manager

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Able to write clear, professional reports and correspondence

  • Well organized and highly analytical

  • Able to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in unique situations where only limited standardization exists

  • Self-motivated, inquisitive, detail-oriented and passionate

  • Future oriented, able to anticipate upcoming needs/trends and formulate and effectively implement strategies around the same

  • Able to read and interpret legal documents such as loan agreements, CC&R’s, management agreements, service contracts and commercial leases
